MOOERS FORKS — Marie C. Lafountain, 68, of the Lamberton Road, Mooers Forks, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Marie was also a stage IV thyroid cancer survivor in 2003. She received medical care in Plattsburgh, Burlington and most recently in Baltimore. But the care she received during the last few months from her husband and children was without question the most compassionate. Her final wish was to be at home. Her husband and children provided her with exceptional care and support during her final days. She died at her home with her entire family by her side.

She was born in St. Chrysostome, Quebec, Canada, May 26, 1943, the daughter of Armand and Gaetane (Rushford) Rabideau.

Marie graduated from high school in 1961 and married Armand J. Lafountain in 1962. The couple honeymooned in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She was employed at Ayerst Labs in Rouses Point for the first three years of her married life. Then she decided to stay home and raise her nine children. These children were her pride and joy.

From 1977 to 2000 her husband, Armand, ran the Lafountain Bros. Dairy Farm, along with his brother Francis. During that time, Marie managed the farm finances, which were based out of their home. Marie was able to balance the demanding farm life and her busy home life. Looking back, running the dairy farm and raising nine children was a balancing act that Marie made look easy.

Soon after Marie raised her nine children, her grandchildren started to arrive. Marie then became "Meme" and she realized her new love and passion in life was to help bring up her 23 grandchildren. Meme continued to stay at home and care for her grandchildren. As the years went by, Meme's home became the gathering place for traditional Sunday dinners, birthdays, anniversaries and holiday celebrations. Marie always felt so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by her loving husband, wonderful children and amazing grandchildren.

In her spare time, Marie enjoyed shopping with her daughters and spending time with her friends. Some of her fondest memories were yearly trips to Florida with Francis and Priscilla Menard; Quebec City with the Lafountain family; and Lancaster, Pa., with daughter Michele and family. Marie and Armand enjoyed two family vacations with the "Original Nine" to Wells Beach, Maine and Outerbanks, N.C. Lastly, her favorite family tradition was the annual Applefest held at her home with all of her daughters, daughter-in-laws, and grandaughters.

Survivors include her loving husband of 49 years, Armand J. Lafountain, whom she married June 9, 1962; their children, Lorie and Charles Porter of Mooers Forks, Lisa and Gregg Roberts of Champlain, Lynn and James Armstrong of Champlain, Louise and Tracey LaMere of Mooers Forks, Michele and Chris Engle of Clinton, N.Y., Todd and Jennifer Lafountain of Mooers Forks, Scott and Jamie Lafountain of Mooers Forks, Nichole and Allen Racine of Mooers Forks, and Brian and Michelle Lafountain of Mooers Forks; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sister-in-laws, Giles and Mary Lou Rabideau of Mooers Forks, Marcel Rabideau of Mooers Forks, Shirley Bell of Plattsburgh and Theresa Rabideau of Mooers Forks; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Robert Rabideau; and a very dear friend, Marie Picotte of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

She was a member of the Ladies of St. Ann's and the Mooers Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann's Church in Mooers Forks with the Rev. Gerald A. Cerank, parish pastor, celebrating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country, 358 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh, NY, 12901.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers. To light an online candle and offer condolences in the memory of Marie LaFountain please visit www.hamilton funeralhome.com
