Census: 1850, age 8 Whitewater, Walworth county, Wisconsin with parents & six siblings.

~ Mother passed away in February 1854 ~

Census: 1860, age 18 Whitewater, Walworth county, Wisconsin with father, a step-mother, her son, & four siblings.

Census: 1870, age 28 Whitewater, Walworth county, Wisconsin with wife & one son listed before his father who is listed ahead of his older sister Caroline.

Father took him into the company in 1872, reportedly renamed: George Esterly and Son.

Census: 1880, age 38 Whitewater, Walworth county, Wisconsin with wife & five children.

1892 became president of The Esterly Reaper Company when father removed it to Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota.

ESTERLY, George W., manufacturer, b. near Whitewater, Wis., April 25, 1842; established the plant of the Minneapolis-Esterly Harvester Company in 1892 at development and engaged in the manufacture of farm, machinery. SOURCE: "Collections of the Minnesota Historical Society"

City Directory: 1894 & 1895, Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, president, Esterly Harvesting company, residence 103 south 13th street, with son Geo M superintendent.

But it all came crashing down when the 'Panic of 1893' lead to a national economic depression that affected the farm economy, two years of drought, and a $2 million lawsuit brought by competitor W.A. Wood (over patent rights to the Appleby knotter) forced closure of the plant in August 1893. It was felt the worst in 1894 and lasted until 1897. Triggered by the bankruptcy of the 'Philadelphia and Reading Railroad' in February, banks began calling in loans and denying credit. The booming 1880's had resulted in inflated real estate values and overproduction in factories. The result was wage cuts, strikes, unemployment, and the ruin of many local businesses. The Minneapolis Esterly Harvester Company went under, leaving 600 employees out of work at its 36-acre plant site. The Minnesota Beet Sugar Manufacturing Company was incorporated on May 10, 1897. In 1898 it took over the 36-acre site of the Minneapolis Esterly Harvester Company and changed its name to the Minnesota Sugar Company.

Kaiser(sic), cousin(sic), age 21(sic), b.Feb 1870 in Wisconsin, parents b.Wisconsin & Maine[sic], Single, Able to read and write, Living with George and Kate Esterly.
