Mildred was born May 25, 1926 in Marion to the late Ceril and Alice (Cope) Friend. She married Robert A. Burke April 15, 1947 in Kalkaska, Michigan. They moved to the Thompsonville area in the 1960's and raised their family. Robert died in 1979.
She remarried October 2, 1980 in Boyne City, Michigan to Russell Smith. They then lived in the Ludington, Michigan, area until Russell's death in 1995. Mildred then moved back to Thompsonville to be close to her daughter.
Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an active member of the Community of Christ Church where she taught Sunday school and worked in the nursery. Mildred had a caring and helpful spirit about her.
She enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels at the feeder. Her family will remember her as a wonderful baker and for the delicious banana bread that she made.
She is survived by three daughters, Jerri (David) Crouch of Niles, Michigan, Bonnie (Ron) Britton of Largo, Florida, and Barbara (Keith) Dinger of Thompsonville, Michigan; a son, Rolly ( Darla) Smith of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a great great grandson; a sister, Marjorie Williams of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Curtis Burke, in 1955; a grandson, Mark Britton in 1986; three brothers, Cy, Forrest, and Donald; and a sister, Clara.
Funeral Services: Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation an hour prior to the service in the Fosnaught-Holdship Funeral Home in Marion, with Elder Sandy Dobias officiating.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Marion
