SLHS Girl Dies Of Injuries
In Bus Accident Tuesday

Judy Nellis, 15, Apparently
Fell In Path Of Vehicle

Judy Nellis, 15-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nellis who reside one-half mile south of Spirit Lake, died early Wednesday morning at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital of injuries sustained in a mishap which occurred late Tuesday afternoon. The girl, a Spirit Lake high school freshman, was struck by the school bus she had just exited from near the Nellis home.

According to officials, the girl slipped on the icy road and fell into the path of the bus. She was dragged about 33 feet by the bus - a fact the driver was not cognizant of until Thomas Underwood, another student of the Spirit Lake school, sighted her lying on the road when he left the bus about 500 feet away.

Four of the Nellis' children were let off the bus. They passed in front of the vehicle, as required by law, and headed for the home which is a short distance from the road. All four went in front, but Judy apparently lost her footing and dropped in front of the bus.

She was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. She suffered a broken collarbone, fractured ribs, head and internal injuries.

Driver of the bus was Melvin Fechter, who has eight years experience in the position.

Dr. Denes Farrago of Arnolds Park, county medical examiner, stated Wednesday morning an inquest would be held-probably Wednesday afternoon. Investigating officers were Highway Patrolmen Marlyn Mossman and James Bonststter.

Funeral services for the girl were pending at Harpole Funeral Home at press time Wednesday. The Nellis. have five other children.
