Henry Axtell Beach was born c. April 2, 1835/37 in Morris County, New Jersey, the son of Henry Beach, who was born in New Jersey c. 1788/89, and Rhoda (_________) Beach, who was born c. 1795 in New Jersey.
At the time of the 1850 census, Henry Axtell Beach is found residing with his parents in Morris County, New York. At the time of the 1860 census, Henry A. Beach is found residing with William Knapp and Elizabeth J. (________) Knapp in Clarkstown, Rockland County, New York. William Knapp is a Butcher in Clarkstown and has a daughter, Melissa, who is 15 years of age in 1860. Henry A. Beach is listed as being 23 and is a Methodist Clergyman.
On August 5, 1861, Henry A. Beach volunteered in Rockland County, to serve in what was to become Co. I of the 48th Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry. Henry A. Beach was mustered in as a Private in Co. I on August 16, 1861, but was soon promoted to Corporal. The 48th New York was eventually assigned to duty in the Beaufort County, South Carolina area and was there at the time the first black regiment, the 1st Regiment of South Carolina Volunteer Infantry (Colored) U.S. was being organized. Corporal Henry A. Beach expressed an interest in helping with the originization of the unit and on April 5, 1863, Corporal Henry A. Beach was discharged from the 48th to accept a commision in the 1st South Carolina.
On April 5, 1863, Henry A. Beach was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. E of the 1st South Carolina. About February of 1864, the 1st South Carolina (Colored) was redesignated the 33rd Regiment of USCT. On April 30, 1864, 2nd Lt. Henry A. Beach was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and assigned to Co. D of the 1st South Carolina. 1st Lt. Henry Axtell Beach served for 5 more months with Co. D before he submitted his resignation, probably because of health reasons. His resignation was accepted on September 23, 1864.
Not long after returned home, Henry Axtell Beach was married to Melissa Knapp, who he had almost certainly been writing to while he was in the service. In 1880, Henry A. Beach and his family are found in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania;

In 1894, Henry Axtell Beach took a position with the Bureau of Pensions in Washington, D.C. and he remained there until he retired, residing in West Falls Church, Fairfax County, Virginia for many years.
