COBDEN -- Robert Michael "Mike" Basler, 75, of Gladstone, Mo., formerly of Cobden, died at 3:32 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, in St. Luke's on the Plaza in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Feb. 25, 1936, in Cairo, the son of Robert J. and Dora Ella Mann Basler.

He married Penelope E. North on Nov. 29, 1969, in Crystal Lake.

Mike is survived by his wife, Penelope Basler of Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, Christopher M. (Tracy) Basler of Boston, Timothy (Rhonda) Basler of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Robbie and Joey Basler; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike was a member and trustee of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cobden for many years.

He was a 1968 graduate of Southern Illinois University, doing graduate work at the University of Illinois.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany for two years.

As a young child, Mike worked with his father at the Basler Feed and Produce in Cobden. After his father's death, Mike continued to own and operate Basler Feed and Produce Store in Cobden until his retirement in 2002. Mike was a trustee on the Cobden Village Board, the Union County Hospital Board, the Union-Jackson Co. Migrant Labor Board and a member of the Cobden Lions Club.

Services for Mr. Robert Michael Basler will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden, with the Rev. Clifford Heil officiating. Interment will be private. Friends may call after 9 a.m. until the funeral hour Saturday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Village of Cobden Park or the Wounded Warrior Project. Envelopes will be available at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden or can be mailed to the funeral home at P.O. Box 633, Anna, IL 62906.
