CHEROKEE —


Vernon L. Brooks, 89 of Cherokee, KS died October 9, 2011 at the James River Care Center in Springfield, MO.

He was born March 29, 1922 in McCune, KS the son of Earl and Bertha (Green) Brooks.

On October 5, 1942 he was united in marriage to Lola Louise Brisbin in McCune; she survives him of Springfield, MO.

Vernon was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He entered in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945 as Technician Fifth Grade, with the 752nd Chemical Depot Company.

He was a union Carpenter with Local 264 in Kansas City, MO, he also was on the Cherokee City Council for 12 years and was the Cherokee City Superintendent for 8 years.

Church membership was held in the First Baptist Church of Cherokee, where he was a Deacon for many years.

Additional survivors include a son Ronald L. Brooks of Odessa, MO; two daughters: Linda Watson of Springfield, MO and Pat Nowell of Cherokee; two brothers Raymond Brooks of Girard, KS and James Brooks of Coffeyville, KS, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Allen-Goff.

Funeral services will be 2 pm, Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Weir with Rev. Jamie Tickel officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherokee City Cemetery.
