Charles S. Harrison was born September 8, 1911, in Idabel, Oklahoma, son of Arthur Porter and Ada Harrison. Charles' mother died October 21, 1911, a month after his birth, and his father later died in 1975. Charles went to live with his maternal grandmother, Serilda Jane McCaslin Harrison.

The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 3, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Charles Porter, age 8, born in Oklahoma; living with his widowed maternal grandmother, Serilda Harrison, age 59, born in Missouri. Also living in the household were Serilda's children: Victor V. Harrison, age 20; Guy Harrison, a confectionary salesman, age 18; and Vivian B. Harrison, age 14; all born in Oklahoma.

The 1930 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Charles Porter, age 18, born in Oklahoma; living with his uncle, Victor Harrison, an odd jobs laborer, age 30, born in Oklahoma; and his widowed maternal grandmother, Serilda J. Harrison, age 68, born in Missouri.

For reasons unknown, sometime between 1930 and 1940, Charles changed his surname to his mother's maiden name of Harrison.

Charles married Winona Lavelle Cearley who was born August 24, 1916 in Hugo, Oklahoma (Choctaw County), daughter of Chester Ambris Cearley (1893- ) and Effie Lee Tinsley (1890- ).

The 1940 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Charles Harrison, a pool hall clerk, age 28, born in Oklahoma; and his wife, Winona Lavelle, a clerk in a variety store, age 27, born in Oklahoma.

Services for Charles (Choc) Harrison, 78, of Durant, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Durant under the direction of Dalton-Holmes Funeral Home.
Mr. Harrison was born September 8, 1911 in Idabel and died Wednesday in Durant.

He was employed by the Oklahoma Tax Commission and retired in 1983. He was a member of the First Christian Church, past president and member of the Mens' Bible Class and attended SOSU for two years. He was married to Winona L. Cearley June 19, 1939 in Durant.

He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Linda Kay McDougal of Sherman; Mary Gail Hill of Durant; three brothers, LeRoy Porter of Lufkin, Texas, Richard Porter and Clem Porter, both of DiBoll, Texas; three sisters, Jeane Millihollin of Perry, Iowa, Alta Faye Wright of Port Isabel, Texas, Emma Lou Dominey of Beaumont, Texas; three grandchildren, Cary McDougal, Alan McDougal, and Mike Moore; one great-grandchild, Ryan McDougal; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Arthur Porter. Bearers will be Earl Haggard, Charles Maupin, Jim Buchanan, Sam McQueen, Lawrence Price, Coy Fuller, Fred Hall Gates, and Dr. Norman Robinson. Honorary bearers will be the Men's Bible Class.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, the Reverend Coy Dee Parsley and Robert Cearley officiating.
