Son of John D. TAYLOR and his 1st wife, Anna Witherington [she d. bef they left Alabama].

Beatrice, Bess, and Bernice Sconce, grandchildren of Jesse M. Taylor, wrote what their gpa had told them regarding his family history. These letters were sent to Mary Lee Sconce Honeycutt, granddaughter of Mary Angeline Taylor Sconce (daughter of Jesse & Elizabeth Taylor). These letters were passed down to Lanita Sconce Smith.

Moved to Jackson County, AL until 1844 when John D's second wife, Elizabeth HALL TAYLOR, having died in 1839 traveling by oxcart from AL to MO/AR line. Son, Jesse Madison Taylor, was known to have told this story, Jesse was 16 years of age when the move took place. He was known to tell the story many times to his children and grandchildren.

Jesse was born in Jackson Co., AL, ; hus. of Nancy E. BEASON and Elizabeth A. JUSTICE; served as a Pvt. in the Fristoes Regimt, CSA. He was very proud to have served in the CSA, as you can tell in the picture. The pin on his right lapel, is the CSA pin.

During the Civil War, while Jesse was in the Confederate Army, the area changed hands a number of times, with the county being on the Mason/Dixon line. A story is told, handed down from Jesse, that one time during the war, Betsy had a ham hock under her arm, carrying from the store. A Union Soldier, who was a neighbor, came upon Betsy and stole the ham out from under her arm. Years after the war, Jesse would tell the story and name and point to the fellow and say, "And HIS NAME IS __________ and he's standing right over there! He's the one that stole food out from under Betsy's arm!" [I would name the fellow here, but his descendants still live in Oregon Co., MO, and are unaware of their ancestor's shenanigans. But like my great great grandpa Jesse, I can say that the culprit is buried at Cotton Creek Cemetery in Oregon Co., MO.]

Jesse mar. Nancy Emily BEASON, dau of Henry BEASON and Frances McKEE, on Sep 17, 1850 in Oregon Co. Nancy d. in childbirth with dau.

i. Sarah Frances. (1851 -). Sarah mar. Preston Taylor SHIELDS

Jesse mar. Elizabeth Ann JUSTICE, dau of John Dyer JUSTICE and Sarah NETTLES, on Aug 9 1853 in Jobe, Oregon Co., MO.

Jesse & Betsy's children were:

i. John Jefferson (Died as Infant). Born on Nov 9, 1854 in Oregon Co., Missouri. John Jefferson died in Oregon Co., Missouri, on Nov 30, 1854; he was 21 days old.
