Peter Mathews died at his home Thursday evening, September 7, 1944 after a lingering illness. His funeral services were held Peckosh Funeral Home Sunday afternoon with the Reverand George W. Turner, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating.
Peter was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. James Mathews. He was born at Woodstock, Illinois on August 22, 1866. Seven years his family resided there, then they moved to Bluffton, Iowa.
In 1901, he married Mattie Dawley Smith and they moved to Belvadiere, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife and four step-children; Bertha Bunch of Orange, California, Claude Smith of Minneapolis, MN, Francis Holly of San Diego, California, and Ralph Smith of Rockford, Illinois. Also, Harry Mathews of Orange, California and Hazel Mathews of Los Angelos, California. One sister, Mary Ann Kuffajelly of Romona, South Dakota and four brothers; John of Cresco, Tom of Plymouth Rock, and Chris and Jim or Burr Oak. There are two grandchildren and a number of friends.
Burial was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
