Ephriam P. Nichols, of the well known family of pioneers who came to Illinois in 1837, the third year of the settlement of DeKalb county; one of 12 children, the father of 10 children, a consistent church worker, a kindly man, a good husband and father and respected citizen, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. William G. Ferguson
in DeKalb at about 10:30 o 'clock on Friday night. He had not been able to be away from his home in Sycamore for about a month until the Tuesday preceding his death, when he
went to DeKalb to be with his daughter. He had been failing rapidly for the last two weeks, and had been in poor health since the death of his wife last spring.
Ephriam P. Nichols was born in Neversink, Sullivan county, N.Y., on October 2, 1829, and was therefore in the 85th year of his age. At the age of eight years, in 1837, he came with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nichols to Illinois.
He acquired the elementary branches of learning in the primitive district school of that time, but he had little opportunity for schooling, as he was the only son who continued at home, his father was in poor health, and he
early assisted in the cultivation of the farm, and remained with his father until he was 27 years of age. He bought eighty acres which he fenced, cultivated and sold. He then bought 160 acres of wild land destitute of improvements, which he improved and which he erected a dwelling and other buildings. Here he made his home until 1887 when he removed to Sycamore and retired from active farming, the
owner of a well improved farm of 200 acres, which he owned at the time of his death. On January 15,1857, Mr. Nichols was married to Miss Sarah A Mullen, who was born in Sullivan county, N.Y., on October 8, 1833, and they lived
together a happy and useful lives until her death, which occurred on April 15, 1913, only about a year before that of her husband. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Nichols were born ten children: V.Wiley Nichols of Mayfield township; Mrs. Millie J. Wetslake of Hartford,N.Y.; Mrs. Lena A. Swartout of Buxton,Iowa; B. Ford Nichols of Lavina,Mont.; George L. Nichols of Sycamore, and Lillian V. Ferguson of DeKalb. Three of the children, Elmer, Maggie and David, died many years ago within
nine days of diptheria. There are also surviving Mr. Nichols brother Stephen Nichols of Sycamore, and his sister Mrs. Decker of Iowa. Mr. Nichols was in his earlier years active in the Wesleyan Methodist church, but since his residence in Sycamore he has been one of the most faithful and consistent members of the Congregational church. For 30 years he was superintendent of the Sunday
school in Mayfield, and later was trustee of the Congregational church of which he was a deacon at the time of his death.
