He was a charter member of the Jacksboro Country Club, Jack County Sheriff's Posse, Jacksboro Chamber of Commerce, Jacksboro Lions Club and Jacksboro Volunteer Fire Deparment. He served as Jacksboro City Councilman and as Chair of the State Highway 24 Association for Jack and surrounding counties during his 24 years in Jacksboro, Texas.Vernon R Akins was a great-grandchild of elder Amos McComas, early Texas pioneer and the founder of Dallas County and the State Fair of Texas.Survived by his wife; one son - Sam V Akins; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters - Mrs. Idabell Cooley and Mrs. Luverna Hollingshead.The Jacksboro Gazette24 August 1987
