A graduate of Murphy High School, Mr. Kasten served with distinction in the U.S. Navy during World War II – successfully completing tours of duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of the war – and rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer before the age of 21. After the war, Mr. Kasten came back to Mobile – and began a long career as a manager for the U.S. Department of Defense – serving in that capacity at both Brookley Field in Mobile – and Warner Robbins Air Force Base in Georgia. After retiring from the Department of Defense – he enjoyed a second career as a real estate broker and property appraiser.
Mr. Kasten was one of the founding members of the Forest Hill United Methodist Church – where he was active as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, choir member and member of the board – and was the last remaining charter member of the Mobile chapter of the (formerly named) Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. – better known as the "Barbershoppers."
