U.S. Congressman. While employed in his father's shipyard, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced to practice law in Goshen, Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, (1835-37), served in the Indiana State Senate, (1839-42), elected prosecuting attorney of the ninth judicial circuit in 1842 and served as president judge of the ninth judicial district, (1843-53). In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 55.
