"Double Funeral on Saturday for Coasting Victims"

Double funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Laurel Methodist Church for Vance Dale Burgdoerfer, 16, and Adoramus Gen Hannefey, 5, victims of a coasting accident early Wednesday evening at Laurel.

The Rev. Otis Burgdoerfer of Fayette County, an uncle of the older boy, and the Rev. C. R. Fitz will officiate and burial will be in the North cemetery at Laurel. Friends may call at the home of Vance's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Burgdoerfer, in Laurel, beginning tomorrow morning and at the home of the Hannefey child's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Creek, north of Rushville, beginning Friday afternoon.

The two riding "belly buster" on a sled with the younger child on top coasted into the side of a car driven by Ashel Poe, former Connersville Chief of Police, who now lives southeast of Connersville. As their sled was speeding down he steep hill in Laurel, which is part of State Road 121, Poe, who had driven a block up the hill from the main street in the town, turned left to drive onto a side street and the sled struck the right side of the car at the rear corner. The younger child was thrown under the auto and was run over.

Dr. H. R. Hoeger, Franklin county coroner, who was called from Brookville to investigate, absolved Poe from any blame for the accident. Both Poe and Jesse Kelly who saw the accident said that the boys could not be seen until they reached the intersection. Other children had been coasting on the hill all day, but these two were the only ones remaining at the time of the accident.

Both boys suffered fractured skulls. The Burdoerfer boy died instantly. The Hannefey child died at 7:40 about two hours following the accident, in Fayette Memorial hospital. His survivors are the mother, Mrs. Lena Hannefey of near Laurel; the father, Thomas Hannefey, Jr., of near Cracker Ridge; a sister Elizabeth Ann; and a grandfather, Thomas Hannefey, Sr., of near Laurel.

Vance's survivors are the parents, a sister, Mary Ann; a brother, Harry Lewis Burgdoerfer, Jr., and a grandmother, Mrs. Mary Bostic of Laurel. Vance was a nephew of Frank Burgdoerfer, Laurel marshall.
