Sister Lucille Herman died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia. She was 80 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 64 years. She was born in Hays, Kan., on May 22, 1931, to Michael and Bridget Wasinger Herman, the second of two children, and was baptized Lucille Catherine. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, on September 1, 1946. On March 19, 1947, Lucille Catherine received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Mary Richard. Later she returned to her baptismal name, Lucille. She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1948, and final vows on May 23, 1952.
Sister Lucille received an AB degree in English from Marymount College in Salina in 1960. In 1969, she received an MA degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in Educational Administration. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Manhattan, Concordia, Gladstone, Mich., Grand Island, Neb., Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. In 1995, Sister Lucille accepted the position of Congregational Secretary and held this position until November 2005, when she moved to Salina, Kan., to become director of the Marymount Alumni Office.
Sister Lucille was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Frances Herman Rohleder and several nieces and nephews. A Bible Vigil Service will be held October 9, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel, with Sister Jodi Creten as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with the Rev. Jim Hoover and the Rev. Alan Scheer presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.
