Of Murderer Charles T. Wright
Passed Away Suddenly

Lansing, Mich., Jan. 24 – Word was received here this morning of the death of ex-Representative Ben Colvin of St. Charles, Saginaw county.

"Uncle Ben" Colvin, as he was familiarly called, was one of the most picturesque figures in the state legislature for two sessions, ending in 1899. He was a fusionist and furnished a good deal of the humor of the session during his term of office. At the same time he was an energetic member and a hard worker. He gained the friendship of Governor Pingree by his attitude on some of the governor's measures.

Colvin was a relative of Charles T. Wright, the Benzie county murderer who was pardoned by Pingree and it was due to the efforts of Colvin that Wright gained his liberty.

Lansing, Jan. 26. – The house yesterday adopted a resolution of respect to the memory of the late ex-Representative Ben Colvin, of Saginaw. It was presented by Representative Dingley, who supplemented it with a few words relative to the affection which former members felt for Mr. Colvin, because of his rugged and honest qualities.

BENJAMIN COLVIN,
Representative from the third district of Saginaw county, was born in Cato, Cayuga county, New York, August 3, 1827. His grandsire came from Scotland and located on Long Island; later moved to Rutland, Vermont, where Benjamin's father was born, and later served in the war of 1812. When Mr. Colvin was seven years of age his father died and he was bound out to a farmer, where he remained for seven years, then started life for himself, and in 1849 he went to Salt Lake City; returned in 1863, and located on a farm in Brant, township, Saginaw county, which he still owns and occupies. Mr. Colvin is one of the pioneers and organizers of Brant township. In politics he belongs to the people's party; was a candidate for congress, and has held several township offices; was elected to the house of 1897-1898, and was re-elected to the house of 1899-1900 by a vote of 1505 to 1,45 for Arthur E. Holt, republican.

Note: Claims of close Scottish [or English] heritage abound in Colvin family lore. However, John Colvin, the immigrant ancestor of most New England Colvins, arrived generations earlier and from whence he came is unknown. In the late 1670s the birth of the first of John's nine children was recorded in Dartmouth, Massachusetts Bay colony.

In the early 1700s John and children removed to Rhode Island; some third generation descendants settled in Vermont prior to the Revolutionary War. Benjamin probably was somehow related to one of the Vermont Colvin lines, but the identity of his "grandsire" remains unknown.

"Uncle Ben" was the only child of Levi Tucker Colvin and his third wife, Elizabeth Stillwell. Land records and censuses indicate Levi moved from Rhode Island to Rutland Co., VT, in the early 1790s. He then went to Cato, Cayuga Co., NY, where in the late 1820s he died.

Since "Uncle Ben" had settled in Saginaw by 1863, he obviously was NOT Corp. Benjamin Colvin who enlisted in the Kentucky Infantry that same year.
