He was born Feb. 22, 1916, to Ephraim and Hettie May Judd Bates in Salt Lake City.
He married Klover Mangum March 25, 1937, in the Salt Lake Temple. John was blessed with a magnificent bass singing voice that penetrated listeners to their very souls, and his choice sense of humor warmed people's hearts and brightened everyone's day even in his final moments of mortal life.
He will be greatly missed by his children, LaNae (Timothy) Ferre and Bonnie Bates; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister, Fern Robison, and brother Keith.
He was preceded in death by daughter Shaunie, granddaughter Heather Ferre, sisters LaVon Clark and Nida Sargent, brother Fay, and his sweetheart, Klover.
