Elizabeth "Betty" Brown Perkins was born about 1779 in Virginia, or North Carolina. It is very likely that her parents were James and Sarah (Riley) Brown of Wilkes County, North Carolina (see below).

Elizabeth "Betty" Brown married Peter Perkins on May 18, 1800 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.

{Please NOTE: Elizabeth's parents are undocumented! While indirect atDNA evidence clearly supports the theory of James and Sarah (Riley) Brown as the parents of Elizabeth (Brown) Perkins, we have yet to find indisputable evidence in some documented form.}

Determining her parents has been difficult. Two Brown household's of interest are John Brown (neighbor in 1830 Census) and Riley Brown (neighbor in 1840 Census).

In the 1830 Census, there is a John (Jno) Brown, who has yet to be identified, living next to Peter and Elizabeth Perkins. After decades of research, Billy A. Perkins believed this John Brown was from Ashe County, North Carolina and had married Elizabeth Risden. Billy A. Perkins believed that Elizabeth Brown was of Scots-Irish and not of German descent. John Brown, who married Priscilla Essman and died about 1834 in Missouri, is another theory currently being explored.

One especially significant clue is the Riley Brown who is living next door to Peter and Elizabeth in 1840 in Campbell County, Tennessee. This Riley Brown's father was James Brown. These facts fit very nicely with the early research of Arlie Lay Sr., where he believed that Elizabeth and her husband Peter Perkins left Wilkes County, North Carolina with Elizabeth's brother James "Jim" Brown. According to Arlie Lay Sr., Elizabeth, Peter, and James Brown migrated to the Knox County, Kentucky and Campbell County, Tennessee area along with the Lay, Ellison and Stanfield/Stanfill families from Wilkes County, North Carolina. However, there is a lack of evidence to prove that James Brown ever traveled to Kentucky/Tennessee. So, Is Riley Brown related to Elizabeth Brown in anyway? Did Riley purchase or inherit property from John Brown?

It seems like that John Brown passed his land to Riley Brown so perhaps more evidence can be found in Land Records and deeds between 1830 and 1840.

Elizabeth (Brown) Perkins final resting place may be in the area of Pigeon Roost, Whitley County, Kentucky. Her date of death is likely before 1850 and her headstone has not yet been found.

Elizabeth parents were finally discovered through a 2 year collaboration of Elaine and April. Elaine found James and Sarah Brown, along with McNeil research, and April found the correct Riley Brown.
Many thanks to the major Perkins family research contributions of William Perkins who did real legwork before the internet.
