Mary "Belle" (Karl) Smith was the daughter of Jacob Karl and Martha (Wiley) Getty Karl. Belle, as she was known, was born July 20, 1872 in Sugar Creek [Township], Tuscarawas, Ohio. Belle married Joseph "Carl" Smith in March of 1899 [October 1899, per Colorado, U.S., County Marriage Records and State Index, 1862-2006]. Carl and Belle had two children: Vernon Getty Smith and Gladys Belle Smith. Gladys was born in 1900 and died in 1991. Vernon was born in 1909 in Oklahoma and died in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1955.
Belle's husband, Carl, was the Vice President of an Oil Company owned by Belle's nephew, Jean Paul Getty, the industrialist. When Belle was born, she joined half siblings: George Franklin Getty, Delbert Louis Getty, Laura Getty and Genevive "Jennie" Violet Getty. Their mother had been widowed when their father, John Getty died in 1867 at the age of 31. George was the father of J. Paul Getty. Belle and Carl named their son Vernon Getty Smith, honoring the father of Belle's half siblings and her mother's first husband. This family history gives descendants a flavor of this family. Three of Belle's siblings were pioneers in the Pacific northwest and all made their mark on that region's history.
