She was born Vincenza Calcagno
in Bronte, Provincia di Catania, Sicilia
Bronte is up the mountain from the large coastal city of Catania. She was named after her paternal grandfather, Vincenzo Calcagno.

Her parents:

*Tommaso Calcagno of Randazzo, Sicilia
*Maria Gullo of Bronte, Sicilia

Her Maternal Grandparents:

*Serafino Gullo of Bronte, Sicilia
*Nunziata Luca of Bronte, Sicilia

Her Paternal Grandparents:

*Vincenzo Calcagno of Randazzo, Sicilia
*Francesca ? of Randazzo, Sicilia

She had the following siblings :

*Franchesca Calcagno Zerbo
*Gaspare Calcagno
*Elisabetta Calcagno Gangi
*Guiseppe Calcagno
*Serafino Calcagno
*Agatina Calcagno
*Nunziata CAlcagno Orecchia
*Serafino (Ensullo) Calcagno

At the age of 16 she came to the USA with her older sister Franchesca. They settled in Jamestown, NY where they had many relatives including their maternal grandmother, Nunziata Gullo. And many uncles, aunts and cousins.

In Jamestown there was a large community of Sicilian immigrants.
At that time Jamestown had many jobs in their factories and mills for both men and women. And Jennie soon found a job working in the textile mills.

On April 8, 1923 at the age of 18 she married Raffio(Ralph) Lavoriano in Jamestown, NY.
Ralph was from Partinico, Sicily.
The family name was later changed from Lavoriano to Laurie.

They had two children:
*Mike, named after Ralph's father
*Jennie, named after Ralph's mother.

In the early years the family lived in Jamestown, NY. Later in 1937 they all moved cross country to San Jose, Calif. The weather was far better than NY and very close to the weather they had grown up with in sunny Sicily.

Jennie was an outstanding cook and she and Ralph owned and operated several restaurants in the San Jose area.

Jennie also always remembered her parents and family still in Sicily. She would send money every Christmas so that her parents could pay their rent for the whole year.
Her sister Nunziata would always say how much that helped the family make ends meet in Bronte.
