KENT COLLISION PROVES FATAL TO DRIVER, 84

EARL C. WRIDE, 84, of 4850 Marlette Ave. SE, who was injured Monday afternoon in an auto accident and also suffered a stroke immediately following the crash, died early Wednesday at Blodgett Memorial Hospital.

His wife, ELSIE, 76, who suffered a collarbone fracture, possible rib fractures and multiple bruises, was reported in fair condition at the hospital Wednesday.

State police of the Rockford post said Wride, driving south on Algoma Ave. NE, stopped for the stop sign at 13 Mile Rd., but then pulled out into the path of an eastbound car driven by Jeffrey L. Blanchard, 21, of Greenville.

The impact drove the Wride auto into the front of a vehicle driven by John J. Battenfield, 26, of Newaygo Rte. 2, who was northbound on Algoma Ave. and stopped for the stop sign. The Wrides were trapped in their car about 20 minutes, and were freed by a Sparta rescue squad.

Blanchard; his wife, Marilyn, 22; son Jeffrey W., 2, and a neighbor, Gertrude Schelben, 33, of Greenville, were treated at Butterworth Hospital for lesser injuries.

Born on a farm on Spaulding Ave. SE, when the area was part of the former Paris Township, WRIDE had been a farmer 50 years. His first wife, LENA ROZEMA, died in 1939 after 25 years of marriage, and Wride married ELSIE MARTIN in 1946.

He was a life elder of Cascade Christian Church.

Survivors besides his wife are two grandchildren, MRS. BARBARA DeJONG of Ada and DONALD L. HEAVEN of Hesperia; a brother, LOUIS J. of Grand Rapids, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Cascade Christian Church Chapel with Rev. Raymond Gaylord officiating. Burial will be in Martin Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the church's Heaven Memorial Fund.

Wride's body is at the Jonkhoff Mortuary.
