North County Times (Escondido, CA) - Wednesday, August 13, 2003

ESCONDIDO - Dr. Arthur W. Adamson, 83, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, of pneumonia.

Born Aug. 15, 1919, in Shangi, China, he lived in Escondido for three years. He received a bachelor's degree with honors from the University of California in 1940, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1944.

He was on the faculty of the University of Southern California, where he was chairman of the chemistry department from 1972 to 1975. He received awards from the American Chemical Society, the Kendall Award in Colloid, the ACS Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry and the ACS Award in Chemical Education.

He is the author of several technical books. He authored more than 65 papers in surface and colloid chemistry and more than 140 papers in the transport process and coordination chemistry.

He was an original member of the Palos Verdes Tennis Club.

Dr. Adamson is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Adamson of Escondido; daughters Carol of San Diego, Janet of Fallbrook and Jeanna of Pennsylvania; sons Phillip of San Diego and Hugh of Fallbrook; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church on Azuaga Street in San Diego with the Rev. Josh Acton officiating.
