Charles Vogel was born in What Cheer, Keokuk County, Iowa to Franklin Edmundson and Maria Ella Penrose. He had an older brother, James Alton, and a younger sister Irene (Edmundson) Beaty. When Vogel was 13 years of age his mother died giving birth to a fourth child, Harry, who also died. Vogel's father, Franklin, subsequently re-married to Alice Hawley Penrose who was the younger sister of Ella. Vogel went on to marry Anna Pearl Purkey who was the adopted daughter of Thomas Smith and Martha (Williams) Smith. Vogel and Anna had two boys, Thomas Cleo and Charles Vogel II. Vogel died from tuberculosis that he supposedly contracted while he was working as a glass blower in Boulder, Colorado. Anna re-married to William Walker Scott.

The small original headstone was provided at Vogel's death in 1918. Charles Vogel Edmundson II made arrangements for the large combined headstone in 1982 at the time of Anna's death. Vogel's name was spelled incorrectly on the original headstone.
