ALONE IN FISHING SHACK: Find Body In 14 Ft. of Water

First county victim of a winter lake tragedy in eight years, Clement (Coby) Langer, 35, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Langer of Route 2, drowned Tuesday morning when he slipped through a two by five foot hole in the ice on Lake Winnebago.

Langer was sturgeon fishing alone in a shanty owned by Henry Doern of Route 2 and four miles out on the lake from Ferry Springs when the disaster occurred.
Exact time of the tragedy was not determined as the victim’s watch was still running when the body was recovered about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday by Sheriff Ted Pagel and Coroner Dr. John Knauf. Dr. Knauf adjudged the death “accidental by drowning “ and said that no autopsy would be held. He advanced the theory that as a kerosene stove was burning in the shanty, Langer many have become partially asphyxiated and fallen into the ice home while dazed. This theory was further substantiated by fishermen who reported that pressure on the lake was low Tuesday and that air in the shanties was close and muggy.
Pagel and Dr. Knauf retrieved the body by the use of a hook, after some 15 minutes. The body was submerged in 14 feet of water and because of the lack of a strong current, was almost directly below the opening in the ice.

This was the first tragedy of its kind recorded in the lake’s history.

Mr. Langer was born Nov. 24, 1912, in the town of Brothertown. He attended Holy Trinity parochial school, Jericho, and was affiliated with the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Holy Name society of his parish church. Langer, who had never married lived at home and assisted his father on the farm. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper and was well known by sportsmen in this vicinity.

Surviving are his parents, and two sisters, Mrs. Norman (Helen) Schneider of Kloten and Mrs. Joseph (Germaine) Bartels of St. Anna.
