Ritter is the German word for "KNIGHT" It was a title of nobility originally bestowed on the brave Nordic soldiers who fought with Otto the Great in the 10th century.

After religious persecution of Martin Luther's followers began, thousands fled to the British Isles under the protection of Queen Anne. All Ritter's in Britian originally came from the German states around the Baltic Sea.

Queen Anne aided the Germans in immigrating to the American Colonies where they primarily settled in New York and Pennsylvania. Known for their innovative farming techniques, they were later encouraged to move south into Virginia and North Carolina by the promise of fertile land.

William Young , his father, Everett, grandfather,Everett Ritter Sr, and great grandfather, Jesse Ritter, were all descendants of this proud heritage despite the comment someone sent, insisting the Ritter family just appeared in North Carolina without coming from anywhere else. Unless you were Native American, you had to emigrate to America!
