Wrecks Claim Four Lives

Midland and Clare County traffic wrecks Tuesday afternoon and early today claimed the lives of three Midland area residents and a Baldwin woman.

The 11th traffic fatality in Midland County occurred about 2 a.m. today when a one car crash snuffed out the life of Thomas Charles Raymond of 563 Brownlee Drive, Sanford. It happened on US 10 near Wild River Road in Jerome Township.

Killed in a two car head on collision on US-10 about two miles west of Clare about 3 p.m. Tuesday (July 11, 1972) were Albert Meyer 80, and his wife, Mattie 71, of 812 Cottonwood Street, and Mrs.Thelma Lund, 63 of Baldwin.

Raymond was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. G. Fred Moenich, Midland County medical examiner.

According to Midland County Sheriff's office, Raymond was driving, went on the expressway when he apparently lost control of his car, it went into the median and then travelled 26 1/2 feet before it struck a cement abutment head on. The victim was ecapulted through air and his body came to rest 180 feet away from the impact, deputies said.

Born Oct. 6, 1953 in Mount Pleasant, the young man moved to Midland as a child and in 1969, the family moved to Sanford. He was graduated from Meridian High School this past June. Raymond had been employed in the past year at the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Midland.

He is Robert L. Raymond of Sanford, one brother Robert W. Raymond of Midland, two sisters, Mrs. Melvin VanNorthwick of St. Louis, Mich, and Mrs. Gary Cooper of Midland.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from the Ware-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Dickerson of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Place of burial had not been determined this forenoon.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and on Friday until time of services.

Meanwhile State Police of Mount Pleasant Post who investigated the triple fatality in Clare County said Mrs. Lund was driving alone in her car headed east and Meyer was westbound on US 10. For some unknown reason, Meyer crossed the center line and collided head on with the Lund auto troopers said.

Mrs. Lund and Meyer were pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Julian Gershon, Clare medical examiner.

Mrs. Meyer died about 4:54 p.m. at the Clare General Hospital.

An Essexville resident for many years, Mr. Meyer was a retired employee of Acme Portland Cement, a division of Martin-Marietta in Essexville.

He was born Jan 11, 1892 at Congerville, Ill, and he and his wife moved to Midland recently.

A World War I veteran, Mr. Meyer was a member of Barracks 74 in Bay City and his wife was a member of its auxiliary. Both were also members of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Essexville.
