My father was born John Edward William Applegate in Trenton, New Jersey, on July 22, 1933, to John Edward and Eleanora May (Stahl) Applegate. He was raised in Hightstown and attended Hightstown schools, finishing the 11th grade before enlisting in the US Army.
He married my mother, Mary Paladino, on August 25, 1962. They bought a house in Spotswood, New Jersey, where we all lived until August 15, 1975, when we moved to Missouri. My parents bought a house in Lawson, Missouri, and we moved in on September 6, 1975.
He was named after his father and also after his mother's brother, William "Bill" Stahl. Uncle Bill was his favorite uncle who unfortunately was killed during combat in World War II.
My father was a greeter and member of the Living Word Church in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He became a Christian late in his life and was baptized on June 14, 2009. He spoke about his church often and about the wonderful people who attended.
