On November 6, 1913 at approximately 4:00 pm police were notified that a man matching the description of sex assault suspect was seen loitering talking to a girl along the road leading from the city to the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company.

Inspector Abreu learned of the call and volunteered to join in the search for the suspect. Upon arriving, officers located the male but could not make I.D. as the suspect gave a different name. He was asked to come with the officers to the police station so positive I.D. could be made.

As the male, accompanied by the officers, arrived at the police car, without warning the suspect pulled a gun and shot Officer Abreu.

Despite being shot, Officer Abreu assisted in the apprehension and disarming of the suspect. The suspect, after shooting Abreu, resisted arrest aggressively and made repeated attempts at using the firearm before it was finally wrenched from his grasp.

Officer Abreu was transported to the Hospital where he succumbed to the trauma and loss of blood from his injuries the next day.
