Anna Lee (Meneely) Baker, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, in Shawnee after a long illness.
Services will be 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 3, at Walker Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Richard Gay, Kelly Casey and Rev. Donnie Knight officiating. Burial will follow in Neal Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice of Shawnee, 2802 N. Anna was born April 11, 1930, to Aaron and Ivy Kitty (Weir) Meneely at ACH Hospital of Shawnee and grew up in the Harjo and Shawnee areas. She entered first grade at Harjo and entered the second grade at Westboro on Benson Park Road. She entered third grade at Canadian School (which was located on 9a Hwy) and graduated eigth grade there. She attended Shawnee Junior High and High School, graduating in 1948. She worked at Kress Department Store in Shawnee during her last two years of high school and moved to Oklahoma City where she worked at the Capital Office Building for the State of Oklahoma in various departments including Child Welfare, Restitution, Adoption and back to the Child Welfare Department for four more years. She then worked for the Oklahoma County DA's office, during which time she married Doyle Baker on June 30, 1951, and their only child was born in 1954. She retired from work and was a homemaker for the next 17 years.
Anna lived in Oklahoma City, Wichita, Kan., St. Louis, Mo., El Paso and Tyler, Texas. Anna eventually rejoined the work force at the Tyler Police Department for eight months. She started working for the State of Texas in secretarial work in several departments including: Adult Services, Training Division and the Library for the Department of Welfare Employees for a total of 16 years, retiring from that position. She moved back to Shawnee in 1988 to care for her mother.
Baker attended Fairview Baptist Church through the youth-age group and was saved at the age of 11 years during a revival. She was baptized when she was 12 in a rural farm pond and when she moved back to Shawnee in '88 she started attending and joined Fairview again. She served as a Training Union adult teacher, Financial Recording Secretary and was a member of the "Joy" Sunday School Class.
Preceding her in death are her parents, one niece, one nephew and other relatives.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, George and Rosa Meneely, who were her caregivers; a son, Dennis Baker, of Euless, Texas; nephews, Chris Meneely and Andy Meneely of Shawnee; one aunt, Lula Stonebraker of Shawnee; and numerous other relatives and friends.
