Linda Brewin Hack
April 2, 1916 - January 4, 2016
Linda Brewin Hack, 99, died Monday, January 4, 2016 at Willowbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. Linda was born on April 2, 1916 in Pryor Lake, Minnesota, the youngest of three children of the late Carl (Charlie) and Etta Hack. The family moved to the Hack farm north of Hebron the following year. Linda attended Wright’s Mill School and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1932. Her life was one of hard work, lightened by her love of music. She often told stories of hiring out to do housework and childcare, of working long hours on the farm, and of walking to Hebron for piano lessons, which she began at age 11. At 16 Linda began playing the piano at Hebron Methodist Church for Sunday services, weddings, and funerals, and continued as pianist for many years; when the congregation purchased its first console organ in the ‘50’s, she had one introductory lesson from the salesrep and excitedly became the church organist.

In October 1942 Linda married E. Harvey Brewin, whom she fondly remembered meeting as a child in Sunday School, and settled into the life of a farm wife on the Brewin Elm Spring Farm near Palmyra. The young couple farmed there until Harvey’s death in December 1953, at which time Linda sold Elm Spring and moved to a smaller Brewin farm nearby. She took a job at Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital in the Records Department and at the reception desk until remarrying and moving to Marshfield, Wisconsin with her second husband, Horace Hack. For twenty years until Horace’s death in 1981 they enjoyed camping with their parakeet Skeeter, music, traveling, and being with their grandchildren. Linda returned to southern Wisconsin in 1987, settling in Fort Atkinson, reconnecting with old friends and family and making new friends at her apartment on Spry Street and at her final residence, Willowbrook.

Although Linda did not have children of her own, she treasured her nieces and nephews and her step-daughter and step-grandchildren. She was a second mother to many of them for months, even years, at a time. They and their children are her closest surviving family: niece Shelby Leschinsky Johnson of Brevard, North Carolina, and great-niece, Lindsay Johnson of Baltimore, MD; niece Sherry Hack Rosman of Palmyra, and family; nephews Ed Carlson of Waukesha, Lee Carlson of Eagle, Michael Carlson of Waukesha and family; and step-daughter Karen Trimberger of Chatham, Illinois and family. Linda was preceded in death by her sister Bernice Hack Leschinsky, her brother Leon Hack, her first husband Harvey Brewin, and her second husband Horace Hack.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30p.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Hebron United Methodist Church, N2349 County Road D, Fort Atkinson. Burial will follow in Hebron Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
