--VALDESE - George Thomas Carrell, 64, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at his residence. He was born Aug. 28, 1947 in Asheville, the son of Augusta Jayne Carrell Gray of Spruce Pine and the late George H. Carrell. He was employed in the food sales industry and was a member and referee of the National Skeet Shooters Association.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Matthew Carrell of Valdese; a sister, Ruth Carrell Bowen and husband, Edward of Versailles, Ky.; and one nephew, George Bowen of Versailles.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville, with the Rev. Michael McFarland officiating. The family received friends Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service. Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10005. Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory in Valdese assisted the family.
