Gene Delano Kinlaw died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday August 7, 2011 at the Brunswick Novant Medical Center, Supply, North Carolina.

He was born on August 25, 1941 in Fayetteville, NC and has been a resident of Shallotte, NC since 1960.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Juston Troy (JT) Kinlaw and Elizabeth Davis Kinlaw, also a brother, Juston Gail Kinlaw and a sister Anne Kinlaw Williams.

Gene was the owner and operator of Gene's Body Shop at Shallotte Point and A & A Auto Rentals for more than 30 years. He was a past coach of the Shallotte Reds Little League team and had been a volunteer working with the 12 Step Program through Open Door Ministries. He was active as a Sunday School Teacher and Usher at Old Shallotte Baptist Church, where he also worked with the Food Ministries Program. He joined Old Shallotte Baptist in April 2003 and truly loved his pastor and his brothers and sisters in Christ with whom he attended church. He spoke of them all with joy and thankfulness in his heart and never passed up an opportunity to invite someone to attend a church service, nor did he pass up a chance to witness for his Lord.

He loved his family and was a bright light to all who knew him. He and Cecilia's home was always open to visitors and some of his favorite days were those spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. When in better health, he could often be found fishing at Ocean Isle Beach and roasting oysters at home. He enjoyed dancing, bowling, gardening and watching his favorite football teams, the Carolina Panther and the Washington Redskins. He liked watching western movies, listening to Elvis Presley songs and, as far as his family knew, he never passed up a Milky Way candy bar in 69 years.

Surviving are his loving wife of 49 years, Cecilia Hewett Kinlaw; a sister, Sandra Kinlaw Huddle, 6 children, Gail Kinlaw Arthur (Robert), Nancy Kinlaw Nagy ( Steve). Gene Delano Kinlaw, II (Rosetta), Philip Jerrold Kinlaw (Heather), Patty Gail Kinlaw and Wendy Renee Kinlaw (Tyler Smith); 13 grandchildren, Melisia White Hewett, Amber Nagy, Alex Willard, Alex White, Justin Kinlaw, Ryan Nagy, Ethan Willard, Breanna Kinlaw, Austin Wilcox, Sydney Babson, Lora Kinlaw, Dalton Kinlaw and Sarah Kinlaw; two great grandsons, Noah Hewett and Jonah Hewett: Two sister-in-laws, Dinah Hewett Jackson (Mike) and Pam Hewett Cheers; a brother-in-law, Terry Hewett and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted 3:00 PM Wednesday August 10, 2011 at Old Shallotte Baptist Church with Reverend Landis Lancaster officiating.
