Emory was a fireman for the Charleston (WV) Fire Department. He, along with six other firemen, died heroically battling the 'Woolworth Fire' on 4 March 1949. Eight were also injured.

Initially interred at Pauley Cemetery, Frame, Kanawha County West Virginia.

Emory C. Pauley
Emory C. Pauley, 51 of Crescent Rd., was with Central station for 24 years. He was a native of Kanawha County and the son of the late Daniel O. and Hazel Hughes Pauley. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dessie Hunt Pauley; three sons, Eugene Emory, William Daniel and Fred Robert Pauley all of Charleston; two sisters, Mrs. William Moles of Elkview and Mrs. Charles Moles of Charleston; two brothers, Everett and Virgil Pauley of Charleston. The body is at the Barlow mortuary.
