[One] of the last survivors [of] the Petersburg Canada Volunteers who served under General Harrison at the memorable seige of Fort Meigs during war with Britain. He died year of our Lord 1837 In the 46th year of his age.

According to "Henning-Mappin with Related & Connected Families", by EA Henning, 1983, H-402. James was a veteran of the War of 1812 and served as clerk of Williamsburg Court. He was also a vestryman of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg in 1836.

Obit- Enquirer (Richmond, VA) Tuesday, May 2, 1837 "Died, in Williamsburg, on the morning of the 24th last, after a lingering disease, Mr. James Cabaniss, Clerk of the Superior Court of James City County, aged 46 years."
