She was born Luigia Grana in Castello Di Annone, Provincia Di Alessandria, Piemonte, Italia.

Sometimes they refer to the town as "Annone d'Asti"

Her Parents were:
*Stefano Grana, 1854-1929
*Giovanna Bergamasco, 1861-1949

She had the following Siblings (The ones I know of):

*Antonio, settled in Alessandria
*Cristina, married name Stella, remained in Castello di Annone
*Rita, married name Tomalino, settled in Torino
*Anna, married name Bossa, settled in the USA
*Isabella, married name Orecchia, settled in the USA
*Luigi, settled in the USA

Luigia grew up in Annone. In her youth she trained as a skilled cook and worked for wealthy families in the area.

In 1911 she would marry Giuseppe Orecchia, who was also from Annone and had lived in the USA for a number of years. Giuseppe had returned to Annone on vacation and was looking for a wife. The two met and married there in Annone.

The newly weds' Giuseppe and Luigia and Giuseppe's sister Isabella Emerinsiana would all move to the USA. Emerinsiana was coming with them so she could wed Giuseppe's good friend Umberto Rossi.

Luigia and Giuseppe would settle in Alameda, CA.

On July 24, 1912 Luigia would give birth to twins; Giovanni Battista and Giovanna Teresa.
And as was the Italian custom the twins were named after their Grandparents.

Luigia and Giuseppe would move the family across the Bay to San Mateo. And Giuseppe would open and run his own shoe repair shop.

In 1917 Luigia and the twins would suffer the tragic loss of father Giuseppe. He had become gravely ill and died on Oct. 31, 1917. He was only 34 years old and the twins were only five years old. Very big loss for the family.

Luigia who spoke very little English had to find work and support the family. She also received much help from her Grana family and the Orecchia family. Fortunately most of the extended famiy lived in San Mateo and the Bay Area.

And back in that era families were there for each other.
