THURMONT, Md. - Kenneth Payton "Ken" Anders, 76, of 214 Sunhigh Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born Feb. 28, 1922, in Rocky Ridge, Md., he was the son of the late Grayson Howard and Grace Emma Brown Anders.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lucille Hartman Anders, in 1990.
He was a mortar gunner with the 29th Division, Company A, 115th Infantry during World War II . He landed on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion and was wounded by mortar fire on July 11, 1944. He received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and the Bronze Arrowhead, among others.
He had worked as a painter with his father. He later pursued gunsmithing and watch repair.
He is survived by five children, Patricia Bledsoe-Anders of Rocky Ridge, Lynn Stambaugh of Frederick, Kenneth G. Anders of Hagerstown, Wade J. Anders of West Virginia and Mark H. Anders of Frederick; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Zelda Anders and Beatrice Irene Anders Angell; and three brothers, Atlee Anders, Wade H. Anders and Kermit Anders.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey and Son, 615 E. Main St. The Rev. James Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Rocky Ridge.
Friends may call Monday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Spinal Cord Injuries Fund, c/o F.C.N.B., Frederick, Md. 21701.
