William Hays Wayland is the son of Albert G. Wayland and Jane Ledgerwood Moffett Wayland.

"Wayland, William H.; b. near Swoope, Augusta Co.; farmer, age 18; enlisted April 28, 1861, at West View; Pvt., Co. F. Promoted to Sgt. Wounded (thigh) at Chancellorsville. Captured near Waynesboro Sep 26, 1864; sent to Point Lookout; exchanged (for Union prisoners) Mar. 17, 1865 paroled at Staunton, May 17, 1865. Went to New Mexico in 1870. Died at Silver City, New Mexico, Jan 7, 1904. Buried Hebron Presby. Church Cem., Swoope, Augusta Co."
