He was born on October 5, 1873, in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, the son of Oliver and Ellen (Hutchinson) Colgate. In 1909, he was united in marriage to Priscilla Appleby of Shirleysburg.
The couple made their first home in Shirleysburg where he was engaged in farming. In April, 1929, they moved to Mount Union where they have since resided.
The deceased was a member of the Orbisonia Lodge, F. & A.M., and attended the Mount Union Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife and two children: Edwin Colgate of Huntingdon and Martha (Mrs. J. Endres) of Williansport. One step-son, Ralph Appleby of Altoona, two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Clark's funeral home in Mount Union with the Rev. Samuel J. Thackaberry officiating. Interment will be made in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Shirleysburg. Friends may call a the funeral home. Masonic services will be held this evening at 8 o'clock by the Orbisonia lodge at the funeral home.
