Helen M. Olson of Moscow died Saturday morning, April 16, 2011, at Good Samaritan Village. She was 99.

Helen was born to Joseph Dunham and Maude (Crumpacker) Dunham in Nezperce, Idaho on March 28, 1912. In 1895 her father had homesteaded the 160-acre ranch where Helen was born and grew up.

She attended the Hicks School, a one-room country school through grade 8, and graduated from Nezperce High School in 1930. She then enrolled in Lewis-Clark Normal School (now LCSC) where she earned a teaching certificate. She began her teaching career by returning to the Hicks School to teach for four years, riding her horse four miles each way most days, and having to build a fire in the stove when she arrived.

Helen moved to Moscow in 1937 to teach for four years at Russell Elementary School. While in Moscow she met Hjalmer Olson, and they were married in Nezperce on September 21, 1941. She then became a full-time farm wife and mother on the family farm east of Moscow.

Two children were born to Helen and Hjalmer. With both children in school, Helen returned to her teaching career at Russell School in 1957. She also enrolled at the University of Idaho, doing summer school and correspondence courses until graduating in 1964 with a bachelor's degree.

Hjalmer died in 1969. With Helen behind the wheel, she and her teaching partner toured the United States in the summer of 1970, bringing a wealth of information back to their students the next fall. She retired from the Moscow School District in 1973.

Helen spent a summer touring Europe, the Scandinavian countries, and England. She was a charter member of the Roadrunners travel group and traveled much of the US, Alaska, and Canada on the Roadrunner bus for a number of years.

Helen was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a long-time member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Rachael women's church circle. In addition, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and doing some knitting; but her favorite times were spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hjalmer in 1969, and her son, Joe, who died in 1966 of kidney disease.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 3:00 PM at Short's Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Gordon Braun officiating. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Village, 640 N. Eisenhower Street, Moscow; or Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1036 W. A Street, Moscow.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel, Moscow, and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
