MARVIN AMOS CULPEPPER

ABBEVILLE, AL….Marvin Amos Culpepper, a resident of Abbeville, died early Wednesday afternoon, September 28, 2011, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. He was 88.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Friday, September 30, 2011, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Michael Whitt and Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P. M. Thursday at the mortuary. At other times, the family will be at the home of a daughter, Janice Pitchford, 211 McClendon Drive, Abbeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hematology/Oncology, Dawn Pitchford patient care fund, 1600 7th Avenue, South, Birmingham, AL 35237.

Mr. Culpepper was born and reared in Henry County, near Abbeville, son of the late Curtis Kelmon Culpepper and Clara Barnett Culpepper. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy on Utah Beach. A lifelong resident of the Abbeville area, Mr. Culpepper was self-employed most of his adult lifetime as a painting contractor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Culpepper was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dawn Pitchford and two brothers, Robert Culpepper and Edward Culpepper.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Jean Stinson Culpepper, Abbeville; two daughters, Janice Pitchford and husband, Larry; and Sherry Flournoy and husband, Steve, all of Abbeville; a brother, Rev. Clarence L. Culpepper and wife, Mary, Eufaula, AL; a sister-in-law, Lucy Culpepper, Columbus, GA; a grandson, Jonathan Pitchford and wife, Genevieve, Point Marion, PA; a great-granddaughter, Dawn Annabelle Pitchford.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Randy Cummings, David Cummings, Ray Stinson, Roy Culpepper, Bobby Joe Espy and Darden Kirby. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of First Baptist Church.

Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
