Capt. Charlie was keeper of Cape Fear Lighthouse and Old Baldy Lighthouse, Bald Head Island, NC from 1903-1933. On May 15, 1958 he threw the switch that put into operation the Oak Island Lighthouse, this new lighthouse was the most powerful operated by the United States Coast Guard and the second most powerful in the world at that time.
He gave dignity and meaning to simple living and good moral conduct. He had an abiding faith in his fellow man. He led the good life and in the living was an inspiration and an example for those who knew him.
Captain Charlie was awarded a National Award by the President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson in recognition of devoted and selfless consecration to service of our country in armed forces of the United States.
