Ensign Robert "Rob" Steel Sr., was born in Carlisle, PA, and served with the 4th Pennsylvania Militia, Revoluntionary War. In 1805, he moved to Ansonia (historic Big Meadows), Shippen Township, Tioga County, PA. He married Esther Rowe and had nine children: Elizabeth, Ephraim, Henry, John, James, Matilda, Polly, Robert Jr., and William. Before his death, he relocated to the farm of his son Robert Steele, Jr., in the Stony Fork Creek watershed, Delmar Township, Tioga County, PA.
The family story is that his war record includes:
Robert was part of the unsuccessful assault on Canada during the Revolution and was held prisoner in Quebec City for a year then exchanged for a British POW.
He was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, assigned to Morgan's rifle group. There is a statue is in Dorchester, Boston honoring their part in the Revolution.
He also fought at the decisive Battle of Ticonderoga. Their rifle skills were excellent and Washington used them well.
He was at Valley Forge during that terrible winter and Robert's name is on a memorial there.
