OBITUARY: "Melvin L. Cahoon August 8th, 1920 to November 20th, 2009. Melvin was born in Colbert Oklahoma to Pearl Todd & Homer Wesley Cahoon and moved to Mesquite NM in the fall of 1927. He bought a farm near Dona Ana family homestead on what now is called the Corrilitas Ranch which he cowboyed from age 8 up.
Melvin met his future wife at the USO Dance married Dorothy Hope Rike and raised 3 sons Leon Wilbur, Gene Lloyd and Clyde Wesley. He joined the US Army April of 1942 and was a Military Policeman in San Francisco California and during WWII was sent overseas and was captured and listed as missing in action and was P.O.W. by Germany and was Honorable Discharged in November 1945.

Melvin worked on surrounding ranches and worked for 16 years a ditch rider, he drove semi trucks and hauled hay and cattle for surrounding ranches, and he took and sold Chile to Northern New Mexico and traded with Indians. He was a Game Warden at Jornado Ranch.

He loved fishing, hunting and of course dancing. Melvin was the current oldest and life Member of the VFW 10124. Melvin was the oldest and life member of the Dona Ana County Sheriff Posse.

Melvin was a member of the F.O.E. Eagles 4038 Las Cruces and the FOE Eagles 4308 at Caballo, NM. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents Homer Wesley Cahoon and Pearl Todd Cahoon, his brothers H.W. Cahoon Jr. and Nathan Cahoon, and his sister Margaret Taylor.

Melvin's wives, Dorothy Cahoon, Joann Franzoy, Joyce North.

Melvin is survived by his three sons Leon W. Cahoon and wife Mitzi, Gene L. Cahoon and wife Lois and Clyde W. Cahoon and his wife Diane. Grand Children Lisa, Tina, Janet, LW, Maggie, Annette, Patrick and Emilie.

Melvin is also survived by his sister's Mrs. Dutch Brumley (Wanda) Las Cruces, Mrs. Joe Barraza, (Leona Hornbrook) El Paso, Texas, Mrs. Sonny Holden (Berta) Las Cruces, NM Mrs. Ethel Carver, Las Cruces, NM and Mrs. Roy Kerr (Vivian), Bois D'Arc, MO, Lita Peterson, ex-wife Margie Carr and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers: Todd Bender, Andy Chapman, Mike Yori, Hub Hubbard, James Carver, Jack Moore. A visitation will be held Tuesday November 24, 2009 at Getz Funeral Home from 4-6 PM. Funeral Service will be at 10 AM Wednesday November 25, 2009 at Getz Funeral Home with burial to follow at Missionary Ridge Cemetery in Mesquite, NM with Military Honors.
