On January 21, 1915 Joseph “J.P.” Pierce Russell died from paralysis as result of a stroke, at his home on Main Street New Iberia, La. He survived by his wife Katherine “Kate” Fitzhugh Russell and Daughter Henrietta Sarah Russell Courts (aka Mrs. Frank Field Courts).
Joseph was born in Liverpool England on April 14, 1849 to Richard Pearce Russell and Marie Honey Russell. He was one of nine siblings. In the 1870’s while majority of his family relocated to Australia, independently J.P. reportedly hid amongst a ship and headed to America first residing in Franklin, La. around 1880 he with the two Gebert brothers organized the Gebert & Russell Shingle Company at New Iberia, LA. After the death of his infant daughter Fannie Fitzhugh Russell he and his wife relocated to Washington, LA where he stabled himself in the lumber industry. While in Washington, LA he was also the First Bank President of the Washington State Bank in Washington, La. returning in 1893 to New Iberia, he made that place his home, building a beautiful home on Main St. New Iberia, LA. One of Louisiana’s pioneer lumbermen. Mr. Russell enjoyed a wide acquaintance. He was actively involved in numerous organizations, one in particular the Aurora Lodge #193 F&AM Masonic Lodge of New Ibeira, La, where he served a Lodge Master. He was buried under Masonic auspices, in Rose Hill cemetery, New Iberia, La in the Fitzhugh family plot.
