Son of Henry Clay and Caroline Mason Snyder.

Married Laura Alma Hawk in 1887. They were the parents of Jetta Snyder Morgan and Vera Snyder Mayhew. Mrs. Snyder died in 1892.
James later married Blanche Heffelfinger, their children were James Rezin Snyder jr., Mark Snyder, Gladys Snyder Sowels, Emmaline Snyder North, Dorothy Snyder Kaufman, Marguerite Snyder Anderson, and Mildred Snyder Hoffman

In 1899 James Snyder purchased a farm three miles south of Monrovia, southeast quarter of section 30, township 6, range 19, a rural route of Farmington. His children were then educated in district 38, Clingan school. The family relocated to Effingham in 1919.

James R. Snyder was elected president of the State Bank of Effingham in January of 1923.
He served as president of the Fair Association and mayor of Effingham.
