Patricia Ann "Patsy" Smith Adams

Patricia Ann "Patsy" Smith Adams, 79, of Athens, died peacefully at her residence on Sunday morning, Sept. 25, 2011, with her family by her side.

She was a native of Bristol, and had lived in Athens for 38 years. A daughter of the late Haskell Volley and Eva Margaret Odell Smith, she was also preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Anna May Edith Nauman Adams.

She was a member of Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the choir for more than 38 years. She was active in several civic and social organizations, serving on committees with the Athens Pilot Club, PEO Chapter AV, the McMinn County Museum Guild, Ingleside PTO, the United Way Fund Distribution Panel and as secretary to the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity. She was especially fond of playing bridge and was a member of two different groups who played together once a month for many years.

She was educated in the Bristol/Sullivan County Schools and graduated with an associate's degree from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., and a bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla. She held executive secretarial positions during most of her working career, retiring in 2000 from First National Bank & Trust in Athens as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Board and President.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Marc Adams of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Odell and Meloyne Barker Adams of Athens; two grandchildren, Brady Odell Adams and Rylan Barker Adams, both of Athens; one brother, the Rev. E. Odell Smith of Banner Elk, N.C.; one brother-in-law and his wife, Michael E. and Dolores S. Adams of Miami, Fla.; and many close cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, located at 205 N. Jackson St. in Athens, with the Rev. Les Rust officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Joshua H. Smith, Dr. P. Sean Smith, Thomas Hamilton, Cary Davis, Hal Buttram and Kenneth R. Charles Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnathan Morningstar, Peter VanNess, J.R. Ballew, Eddie Morris, James Majors, Scott Hallenberg, Douglas Harrod and Dr. Mark O. Scott.

The family will receive friends at a reception in the fellowship hall of the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mars Hill Presbyterian Church, 205 N. Jackson St., Athens, TN 37303; American Cancer Society, c/o Faye Forgety, 120 County Road 447, Athens, TN 37303; to any of the above organizations to which she donated time or to a charity of your choice.
