Irene C. Dunkin Stooksbury was the daughter of Melissa Catherine Swann and Robert Hines Dunkin. Her father was the postmaster of Henry's Crossroads, Sevier, TN from 1883 to 1898. She was the granddaughter of Civil War Veteran John Cowan Swann, and his wife, Sarah Duggan, both descendants of Tennessee pioneer families and strong Union supporters. Irene married Ross Lee Stooksbury. The couple lived in Knoxville, Tennessee where Ross worked in a dry cleaning business. They were the parents of seven known children: Kenneth L., Joseph D., Willie K., Elizabeth M, Mary Malissa and twins Robert Hines and Ruth H.
