Article from the Kansas City Star, May 1, 1915:
Struck by a motor car while on the way home from the Prescott school, Merrill Burns, 9 years old, was probably fatally injured at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Bethany hospital, where physicians said he can not recover. The accident occured at Fourteenth street and Central avenue. The motor car, just purchased by A. C. Root, a railway mail clerk residing at 1348 Waverly avenue, was being driven by him under instructions of William Simmons, a negro chauffeur. As the car approached the crossing Merrill and a schoolmate attempted to cross the street. Merrill, witnesses say, became confused and stepped back in the path of the car. His companion continued and was not injured. Witnesses also say the car was traveling at a low rate of speed. Both Root and Simmons were taken to the police headquarters and released after furnishing a $2,000 bond each. Merrill is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Burns, 230 North Sixteenth street. Mr. Burns is a railway conductor in the employ of the Missouri Pacific.
