There are some errors on the Rev Halbach article about Karl. He was my maternal great-great-grandfather's younger brother. Karl was born in the Village of Laer, now the Bochum-Laer district in the city of Bochum & at that time it was the Kingdom of Prussia.
Karl immigrated via Bremen in 1852, after his brother Theodore was already here, married & settled. Theodore arranged the marriage between Karl & Elizabeth Honkomp, who were married May 5, 1853 at St Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna. They lied about Karl's age to Elizabeth to make the marriage more attractive to her, so you will find him with the wrong birth years in earlier census data, for example the 1860 census taken Sept 1st in Delaware County shows "Charles Goerdt" only 35 years old, when in fact he was nearly 45 by that date. On his 70th birthday, he finally confessed he was 80 years old.
By the 1860 census Elizabeth, Anna(1), Henry & Herman were born.
Their 13 childrens' names were:
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Goerdt
Anna Goerdt
Henry Goerdt
Herman Goerdt
Frank Goerdt
Mary Elizabeth "Maria" Goerdt
August C Goerdt
Anna Drexler (born Goerdt)
Elizabeth Drexler (born Goerdt)
Francis "Frank" Goerdt
Rosa Goerdt
John Goerdt
Josephine Goerdt
